Phenomenal Woman, Celebrating The Life and Legacy Of Dr. Maya Angelou

young_maya_angelouharlemworldblog1

I had been studying some of Dr. Maya Angelou’s earlier pieces as inspiration for my new poetry book. I was deeply saddened and shocked to hear the news of her passing this morning. While today may be a somber one and our hearts may be heavy we must remember to carry on her legacy in love and light. We must remember to embrace all that she has given us individually and collectively. I remember the first time I read a poem by her (Phenomenal Woman) I felt empowered and so inspired. Maya Angelou made me feel confident about creating poetry and aspiring to be an author at such a very young age. I didn’t know much about poetry at 13 but she amongst many others helped me believe that I did and could pursue it as I grew old. It is because her that I am a proud African American author/poet and push forward to peruse so many other amazing things. A renowned novelist, poet, educator, and woman of film has paved the way for so many and did so gracefully. May her words and legacy forever live on all over the world in books and in all of our hearts. Rest Peacefully Dr. Maya Angelou. Check out some inspiring quotes sure to warm your heart and day from Maya Angelou below.
